In 2024, we embraced this challenge and set out to prove once again why Infobip Shift is dubbed ‘the largest and best Developer event in Southeastern Europe’ by creating a gamified conference event experience.

Drawing on a deep understanding of what makes our audience tick, given Infobip’ss global developer community, we leveraged our technology and partnered with Inner Reality, Codified Development , and SplxAI to create ‘Shift Quest: Layers of Reality’ a WhatsApp-based adventure that seamlessly bridged tech and play through eight mini-games showcasing innovation at every level.

Our goal? To transform typical chatbot engagement into an immersive experience that demonstrated the possibilities of gamification and connectivity in a way that was both interactive and unforgettable.

From AI assistants with big personalities and an AI-powered voice challenge to hunting virtual ducks in augmented reality and a meta-game involving creative prompt extraction, Shift Quest reflected Infobip’ss playful brand persona by captivating audiences with exploration, and fun with advanced technology and thoughtful storytelling.

With over 27,000 messages exchanged in just 24 hours, Shift Quest demonstrated the power of immersive gamification to drive interactive, unforgettable events perfectly aligning with Infobip’ss mission to redefine connectivity and innovation through dynamic and meaningful interactions.

Shift Quest broke new ground by leveraging AI-powered chatbot technology to onboard players into a gamified augmented reality game a blend of technologies offering an immersive user experience for event activations. The innovation lay in seamlessly integrating WhatsApp chatbot interactivity with WebAR, demonstrating how AI-powered chatbots can deliver personalized and gamified experiences. To ensure uninterrupted access, the event space was optimized for 5G, allowing players to participate without interruptions, even outside WiFi hotspots.

But that wasn’st the only standout innovation.

Throughout the gameplay, Shift Quest stacked layers upon layers of technology, all supporting the overarching narrative while ensuring a smooth and intuitive user experience:
– AI Assistants: Players could request ‘divine guidance’ from The Duck, a conversational AI providing tailored hints with a cheeky personality that enriched gameplay and narrative.
– Voice Recognition Challenge: Players recorded ‘I love Shift Zadar!’ while modulating their voices to match a target soundwave. An AI system analyzed and ranked their efforts, adding an interactive twist.
– Augmented Reality Hunt: Players moved seamlessly from WhatsApp into WebAR, hunting virtual ducks hidden across the venue, blending physical exploration with digital gameplay.
– Creative Prompt Extraction: In the final challenge, players used prompt extraction techniques to ‘make The Duck quack’ and unlock the final code, highlighting AI security while delivering a thrilling conclusion.

By merging storytelling with advanced integrations, Shift Quest showcased a new standard for gamified event activations, bridging narrative and technology to redefine engagement.

Shift Quest was designed to captivate attendees from the start, seamlessly blending advanced technology, immersive storytelling, and real-world challenges into a multi-level game experience delivered through a chatbot with a big personality that perfectly aligned with audience preferences.

Participants navigated the conference venue both “in-game” and “in real life” under the guidance of The Duck, Shift’ss beloved mascot turned chatbot game master. Across eight progressively challenging levels, players solved riddles, mastered tasks, visited specific booths, and explored the impressive 15,000 m² venue venturing even into augmented reality. Far from being glued to their screens, participants stretched their legs, wit, and even vocal cords as they uncovered clues and advanced through the game.

The final challenge demonstrated the importance of security in AI, tasking players to ‘make The Duck quack’ by using prompt extraction techniques to unlock the secret code and complete the Quest.

Inspired by classic text-based adventures and reimagined with cutting-edge technology, Shift Quest heightened the event experience by introducing an element of play and discovery that stood out amid traditional tech displays. The gamified adventure, coupled with meaningful lessons in technology application, left a lasting impression.

Shift Quest provided more than entertainment it offered participants a deeper understanding of how technology can address real-world needs like information access, security, and navigation, aligning seamlessly with Infobip’ss mission to showcase innovative applications of conversational AI.

Focusing on the augmented reality component of the Shift Quest experience, Inner Reality’ss immersive WebAR platform achieved an average conversion rate of 80%, significantly outperforming traditional methods like web forms, which typically see less than a 1% conversion rate. This was amplified by Infobip’ss AI-powered chatbot channel, where 99% of users entered the game via WhatsApp and completed the entire user journey.

What had started as a standard booth chatbot, attracting limited attention, evolved into an advanced, gamified conference experience that took over the venue earning its place on the main stage with over 27,000 messages exchanged. Shift Quest captivated 462 unique players, who participated in 909 sessions, with each user averaging two sessions during a 24-hour playing window highlighting a continuous appetite for the developer audience.

Players explored the impressive 15,000 m² venue, solving riddles, chasing robots, and hunting virtual ducks. The activation also created a noticeable buzz across the event space, as participants weren’st restricted to a specific area, generating a contagious excitement that encouraged others to join in.

Shift Quest seamlessly bridged physical and digital engagement, transforming a typical chatbot into a centerpiece of the conference experience. The activation demonstrated Infobip’ss commitment to innovation, leaving a lasting impression on attendees and redefining expectations for event engagement.

From eight meticulously crafted levels to advanced integrations that bridged tech and play, Shift Quest was more than just a game or a chatbot it was a masterclass in engagement and collaboration.

The project’ss success was the result of close collaboration between Infobip’ss internal teams and external partners. Internally, cross-functional teamwork brought together creatives, developers, product managers, the AI and system engineers to conceptualize and execute the game’ss core components. These included the AI-powered Voice Challenge, where players matched soundwaves to a target, and the AI Assistants dedicated to each level, providing tailored guidance with a cheeky personality.

Externally, partnerships expanded the game’ss technical scope. Inner Reality led the creation of the immersive AR experience, developing a custom WebAR solution that integrated seamlessly with the game. Infobip’ss creative team provided direction and support, ensuring it was fully aligned with the game’ss overarching narrative and aesthetics. Codify developed the API that enabled the automated registration process from WhatsApp to Inner Reality’ss platform, ensuring smooth transitions between game layers. SplxAI contributed to the final challenge, crafting the prompt extraction element to demonstrate AI security concepts in an engaging way.

Regular cross-functional meetings ensured alignment on the activation’ss goals, while ongoing communication with event vendors helped integrate the experience into the venue seamlessly. Proactively anticipating technical challenges allowed for smooth execution and a high-impact activation.

Shift Quest exemplified how collaboration across teams and with external partners can bring an ambitious vision to life, showcasing Infobip’ss technology and redefining what’ss possible in event engagement.

The Shift Quest activation model is highly scalable due to its ease-of-accessibility, digital-first design and seamless integration of AI-powered chatbot technology. Its adaptability makes it suitable for events of varying sizes, industries and demographics, offering both mass engagement and personalized interactions.
