ESG

What initiative has made the greatest impact in advancing sustainability, social responsiblity or corporate governance in the mobile industry?

Green Computing

Telarix

Sustainability encapsulates a wide range of environmentally friendly and renewable practices focused on climate change, natural resource conservation, biodiversity, and sanitation. To avoid the worst effects of climate change, the world must limit global temperature increase to below 1.5°C (or 2.7°F) within the next 25 years. 2050 is the target set by the Paris Accord. However, most countries are setting even more aggressive targets for net-zero impact as early as 2025/30. Greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions are the main contributor to rising global temperatures through the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas). It is here, in the increasing or decreasing of GHG emissions that the telecoms industry has the greatest impact on overall sustainability efforts.

In 2022, the telecom industry was responsible for 1.4% of the global economy’ss total emissions (thirty-seven billion CO2e tons), a figure on par with the aviation industry. Over 45% of the emissions released in 2022 from the telco industry relate to data centre usage. Improving the telecom industry’ss carbon footprint starts with tracking and reporting emissions from business operations (energy consumption, travel, shipping, etc.) and setting emissions targets for the future.

Telarix is playing its part in achieving the climate change targets set out by the Paris Accord by prioritizing renewable energy sources and reducing our use of computing power. At Telarix, computing optimization is critical to our products, solutions, and business. We are consistently investing significant R&D efforts into improving our traffic loading and KPI processes. We have reduced our energy consumption and operational costs by enhancing our processing speed by over 40% and implementing intelligent server management in our data centres. As of 2024, our data centres operate on 100% renewable energy. While these efforts have reduced our own carbon footprint, we are a small fish in a big ocean. Telarix continues pushing for better reporting standards to advance sustainability in the telecom industry.

Telarix has been a leading provider of wholesale solutions enabling global operator-to-operator and operator-to-enterprise partner relationships for over 25 years. We empower operators to keep pace with voice and messaging market evolution, business pressures, and enterprise demands through flexible and automated price list management, least-cost routing, rating, and billing.

Tele2

The fundamental idea for Tele2’s sustainability strategy is to focus our efforts on areas where the nature of our business and services allows us to maximize our impact. We firmly believe sustainability efforts should go hand in hand with the core operations of a business. That is how companies and organizations can maximize their contributions to a more sustainable society at large.

To develop its sustainability strategy, Tele2 conducted a comprehensive analysis of its past and future sustainability efforts, including gathering input from over 6,000 employees, consumers, B2B customers and investors. The analysis resulted in a number of sustainability areas where Tele2 can make a difference, with four areas that stood out as especially significant for both internal and external stakeholders, while also aligning with business strategy and relevant UN Sustainable Development Goals

Driving Real Climate Action: Sinch’s Net Zero Journey Led by Karin Arrenfeldt

Sinch

Sinch has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and aims to achieve Net Zero by 2050, guided by Karin Arrenfeldt, Head of Sustainability. This bold, science-backed roadmap aligns with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement and ensures meaningful reductions across all emission scopes.

Challenges

  • Global Climate Imperative: As a leading communications provider, Sinch recognized the urgent need to align business growth with deep emissions reductions.
  • Emissions Profile: With a heavy reliance on data centers, energy consumption posed the largest challenge. Lowering scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions at scale required both systematic planning and broad stakeholder engagement.

 Solutions

  • Science-Based Targets: Sinch committed to SBTi, setting near-term and long-term goals:
  • Net Zero by 2050: A major milestone ensuring alignment with the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement.
  • 2025 & 2030 Benchmarks:
    •  Scope 1 & 2 (Direct & Indirect Emissions): Targeting a 97% reduction in intensity by 2025 (versus 2024 baseline) and an absolute 42% decrease by 2030.
    • Scope 3 (Value Chain): A 52% intensity reduction by 2030, achieved by engaging suppliers to set their own emissions-reduction targets.
  • Efficiency & Renewable Energy: Under Karin’s leadership, Sinch is optimizing data center efficiency, sourcing renewable energy, and promoting sustainable IT infrastructure and travel practices.
  • Supplier Engagement: A collaborative approach encourages key partners to align with Sinch’s green agenda, scaling impact beyond the company’s direct operations.

Impact & Results

  • Substantial Emissions Reductions: By setting clear milestones and focusing on data center efficiency, Sinch is on track to make significant cuts in carbon output across all scopes.
  • Industry Leadership: As one of the first major CPaaS providers to embrace science-based targets, Sinch raises the bar for climate accountability within the telecommunications and mobile sectors.
  • Value Chain Transformation: By requiring suppliers to establish their own emissions-reduction plans, Sinch’s actions ripple across the broader mobile ecosystem, driving a collective push toward net zero.
  • Positive Corporate Culture: Karin’s sustainability strategy has mobilized Sinch’s workforce, fostering a shared sense of purpose and responsibility for the planet.
  • Takeaway: By fully committing to SBTi and a Net Zero goal by 2050, Sinch and Karin Arrenfeldt exemplify how ambitious, science-backed targets can galvanize an entire organization and value chain. Their approach demonstrates that climate action is both achievable and necessary—setting a compelling example for the mobile industry to follow and creating lasting impact for both our planet and the people who call it home.
