National and local elections are being held today in the Philippines, and biometric technology from Gemalto is playing a key role.
The company has revealed that it was selected, together with domestic IT firm Nextix, to provide biometric voter identification technology to the Philippines’ Commission on Elections, or ‘Comelec’.
This was realized in the form of 30,000 tablet devices equipped with fingerprint readers, called Voter Registration Verification Tablets. The tablets were designed to scan a citizen’s fingerprint and match it against Comelec’s voter database, eliminating the need for the voter to present government ID.
It isn’t simply about convenience, of course. The larger aim is to eliminate voter fraud by ensuring that each eligible citizen gets a single vote.
The misuse and fraudulent abuse of phone networks is a growing worldwide problem that continues to trouble regulators, hit service provider revenues, impact customer service and annoy businesses and consumers alike.
A new market brief from industry leading telecommunications partner, iconectiv, highlights proactive measures service providers can use to block unwanted calls and reduce network fraud, including revenue share, subscription, PBX hacking and Wangiri fraud. The brief outlines best practices for using numbering intelligence to augment existing fraud management systems to outsmart the fraudsters.
“Stopping and preventing fraud remains a moving target, and fraud managers must be mindful and vigilant,” said Richard Jacowleff, CEO and President, iconectiv. “With fraudsters becoming increasingly sophisticated, security and fraud strategies need to stay several strides ahead of the latest techniques in order to efficiently and effectively block vulnerabilities before attacks happen.”
Neustar Partners with Canadian Telecommunications Service Provider TELUS to Combat Illegal Caller ID Spoofing with Call Authentication
Neustar, Inc., a trusted, neutral provider of real-time information services, and TELUS, one of Canada’s largest telecommunications companies, today announced a successfully completed test of Neustar’s Certified Caller software suite deployed in TELUS’s NFV lab environment to authenticate and verify calls using the STIR/SHAKEN protocol.
This significant milestone supports the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) request of telecommunications service providers to deploy caller ID authentication and verification for voice over internet (VoIP) calls to reduce illegal caller ID spoofing.
“We fully support the adoption of STIR/SHAKEN as a means to restore trust in calls,” said Neustar General Manager and Vice President of Caller ID Solutions James Garvert. “Neustar has played a key role in defining these industry standards and is committed to vast industry adoption to stop call scams and illegal and unwanted robocalls. Neustar’s Certified Caller is a full STIR/SHAKEN solution that enables service providers to meet the standards to authenticate and verify the caller telephone identity between originating and terminating carriers and detect and warn subscribers of spoofing.”
