More non-Europeans than Europeans use their smart home devices daily, with 52% of non-Europeans using them once a day or more often, compared to 39% of Europeans, according to MEF’s 11th Annual Consumer Survey. The higher usage of smart home devices by non-Europeans is likely due to the predominating use cases in the flagship smart home markets such as the US, China, and Japan, where consumers use smart security systems, smart appliances, smart entertainment systems, smart lighting, and remote monitoring – all of which invite daily interaction. In Europe however, the focus for smart device usage is more on sustainability and energy efficiency, such as smart thermostats – these types of use cases are less likely to require direct daily human intervention.

The latter is borne out by the finding that 30% of Europeans use their smart home devices once a week, compared to 25% of non-Europeans. Meanwhile 4% each of non-Europeans and Europeans use their smart home devices less than once every six months, suggesting that some consumers at least could have buyers’ remorse.
