FICO Survey Shows South Africans Will Bend the Truth to Access Credit

FICO’s 2025 Consumer Survey on Fraud, Identity and Digital Banking in South Africa reveals growing financial dishonesty among consumers facing economic pressure. Twenty-six percent admit it’s acceptable to exaggerate income on loan applications, while 22% say it’s normal for mobile contracts. The findings highlight rising financial strain and the concerning normalization of first-party fraud in South Africa’s credit landscape.

“Consumers are falsifying information in applications to gain credit, not understanding how much these loans could stretch their finances and risk leaving them unable to repay, or even facing the consequences of committing fraud,” said James Roche, principal consultant at FICO. “Banks are up against a constant challenge to prevent fraud and lend responsibly. While checks during applications may feel frustrating, they are there to protect the customer.”

“South Africans’ expectations of their financial providers are higher than ever. This is about trust,” said Roche. “People want to know their data is safe, applications are being fairly evaluated and the systems in place are capable of distinguishing between legitimate use and criminal intent. This highlights a critical need for financial institutions to design identity verification journeys that are adaptive, intelligent and frictionless. Institutions need to invest in technologies and strategies that deliver speed without sacrificing accuracy or trust.”

Telenor Linx: Proactive Fraud Prevention in Telecommunications

Telenor Linx takes a proactive, zero-tolerance approach to fraud prevention, going beyond blocking calls to tackling perpetrators, financial flows, and industry collaboration. Between 2018–2024, this strategy cut fraud exposure by 93% and secured a 95% recovery rate. Fraud expert Endre Syvertsen actively shares insights in industry forums, stressing that blocking millions of calls is unsustainable without addressing root causes. His views, amplified by Commsrisk, sparked wider debate on the need for proactive and accountable fraud prevention across telecoms.

Endre Syvertsen, Customer Success & Fraud Specialist, Telenor Linx stated that “At Telenor Linx, we’re doing everything we can to secure all traffic – not just the traffic toward Telenor. We believe that trust in communication should be universal, and that proactive fraud prevention must be built into the core of every connection.”

He added “We now flag one third of all calls we handle as fraudulent and block them. This is not sustainable and an issue threatening the entire industry’s reputation! Over the past year, we have seen a 30% increase in blocked calls, and it is increasing. Whilst this shows that detection systems are working harder than ever, it also raises a critical question: Why is fraud still growing despite all the promises to fight it?”

He also mentioned “Carriers have a responsibility to be part of the solution. If they’re not actively filtering and fighting fraud, they’re part of the problem. It’s time for real accountability, real collaboration, real solutions, and real and meaningful actions.”
