Total text messaging in the United States continues in rude health with approximately 2 trillion messages sent in 2023 (that is 5.48 billion per day!) while most of the rest of the world has seen SMS/ MMS volumes fall off a cliff with the arrival of OTT messaging apps. However, Apple’s recently announced support of RCS messaging in iOS-18 (to be released later this year), and the long-awaited adoption of Google’s RCS messaging platform by all major US mobile network operators, could be the trigger that will eventually send US messaging traffic down a richer route.
