Age verification and assurance is a driving force for the future of digital engagement, especially with digital identity. Some unavoidable and unequivocal laws are coming down the tracks that will drive the need for more and more businesses to responsibly and reliably verify the age of their online visitors and their offline customers with digital IDs. These regulations go beyond the oversight of experiences directed at children; they oversee experiences (websites and apps) that children may likely access.
A minute change, but one with massive ramifications as more and more businesses will need to comply. Just look at the evidence. Last month, California’s Governor Newsom signed into law the California Age-Appropriate Code Act, which takes effect July 1, 2024. In light of the Digital Services Act, advertisers across the EU must find ways to avoid profiling children when targeting ads. The U.S. has put forth the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA). Regulators in France, Germany, and the UK are also stepping up their age verification requirements, including the AV Media Services Directive– in areas like the enforcement against video-sharing platforms; ads for chocolate, gambling, and alcohol are increasingly required to avoid exposure to minors.
The responsibility to get it right is on the business. This adds up to extensive marketing, business, and technology change. Are you ready? Is your business ready?
