For the last two decades, technologists, academics, policy-makers, futurists, regulators, and more, have been spearheading a movement to bring trust and security back to markets by giving individuals, governments, and businesses the ability to reliably prove their identity and share their data without sacrificing their privacy or security. This movement, commonly known as Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), is an evolution, not a revolution; it is rooted in an evolving landscape of technology, standards, specifications, protocols, governance frameworks, and new business models. SSI promises to bring a wealth of benefits. A fundamental building block of any SSI implementation is the Verified Credential (VC). In this session, the authors of the May 2022 OpenID Foundation Whitepaper “OpenID for Verifiable Credentials (OpenID4VCs)” will demystify VCs. They will start by lightly touching on the related VC terminology and technology. They will explain the business benefits and efficiency gains you can achieve by integrating VCs into the customer journey of your products and services. Finally, they will share concrete steps on where you should start familiarizing yourself with VCs, SSI, and the future of personal data and identity management.
