iProov Threat Intelligence Uncovers “Grey Nickel” Threat Actor Targeting Banking, Crypto, and Payment Platforms
iProov, a global leader in biometric identity verification, has uncovered a major cybercriminal campaign targeting financial institutions through weaknesses in remote identity verification systems. The threat actor, dubbed “Grey Nickel,” has been observed by iProov’s Security Operations Center (iSOC) conducting active and coordinated attacks against banks, crypto exchanges, e-wallets, and digital payment platforms across Asia-Pacific, EMEA, and North America. The operation marks a significant escalation in cyber threats, with attackers specifically engineering methods to bypass Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols, raising serious concerns across the financial services industry.
“These criminal groups understand that banking, crypto exchanges, e-wallets, and digital payment platforms represent some of the highest-value targets for identity fraud,” said Dr. Andrew Newell, Chief Scientific Officer of iProov.” It is important to understand that these aren’t opportunistic attacks; they represent highly coordinated, specialized operations that pose an existential threat to the digital transformation of banking.”
Operators Invest More than $17bn in AI-based Security to Capitalise on the Telco B2B Opportunity
A new study by Juniper Research reveals that telecom operators are set to invest over $17 billion globally in AI-based network security over the next five years, with annual spending rising from $2.5 billion in 2025 to $4.6 billion by 2029. This surge in investment is driven by operators’ increasing focus on expanding B2B revenue streams in critical sectors like transportation, healthcare, and energy, where secure networks are essential. The report highlights that AI-powered intelligent and autonomous security systems will play a foundational role in enabling this growth.
Research author Alex Webb remarked: “Agentic AI will enable operators to inject autonomy into their network security operations; responding in real-time to threats to the network while retaining efficiency. These systems will better position operators to protect enterprise traffic; providing the foundation for strong B2B revenue growth.”
Manufacturing Cellular Connectivity Revenue to Exceed $8 Billion by 2030
New research from Kaleido Intelligence reveals that cellular connectivity in the manufacturing sector is set to surpass $8 billion by 2030, rising from under $2 billion in 2025 at a compound annual growth rate of 34%. Driven by growing demand for applications such as computer vision and automation, the sector is increasingly exploring private cellular networks. While average revenue per connection (ARPC) is expected to rise, the adoption of advanced technologies like 5G RedCap modules remains limited outside China due to high costs. Nonetheless, manufacturers continue to seek future-ready connectivity solutions to support long-term deployments amid rapid technological change.
“Cellular connectivity often promotes itself as a technology-first solution”, remarked research author James Moar. “However, our research has found that the manufacturing industry has shifted to wanting solutions-based products, regardless of the underlying technology, as well as increased interest in end-to-end solutions. Cellular providers need to demonstrate that the technology is the best fit on utility grounds, rather than simply assuming its superiority is self-evident.”
