Boku Marks Accelerated Global Customer Traction and Rapid Payments Innovation in 2024

Boku, the global leader in localized payment solutions, has achieved a milestone year in 2024, marked by robust commercial growth, increased merchant adoption, and the establishment of key strategic partnerships across Europe, APAC, and Africa. The company reported a 24% rise in H1 2024 revenues, alongside a 30% increase in monthly active users, underscoring its strong market performance and expanding reach.

Under the leadership of CEO Stuart Neal, who took office in January 2024, Boku has made significant advances in international markets. The company has secured prominent partnerships and launched innovative platform enhancements to drive its mission of simplifying payments for global merchants.

A major milestone was reached in April 2024 when Boku obtained a Payment Aggregator license from the Reserve Bank of India. This achievement enables the company to provide seamless access for global merchants to one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies via its localized payments network. In June, Boku announced a strategic partnership with BLIK, Poland’s instant payment system. This collaboration empowers BLIK’s 16.3 million active users to make A2A (account-to-account) payments directly in the Google Play Store, marking a significant step forward in expanding Boku’s services and fostering innovation in digital payments.

Boku CEO Stuart Neal said, “2024 has been an inflection point for Boku – the company is now well positioned as one of the world’s largest and most innovative global payments networks with significant expansion in key global markets, most notably in Europe, APAC, and Africa, with significant market launches scheduled for LATAM in 2025. We’ve won industry recognition for leading rapid payments transformation and helping our merchants to grow services and repatriate settlement funds from across the globe. We look forward to carrying this momentum forward into 2025 as we accelerate our purpose to give people the freedom to buy what they want, the way they want.”

iProov Discovers Major Dark Web Identity Farming Operation

iProov, the global leader in biometric identity verification solutions, has revealed a major dark web operation centered on bypassing Know Your Customer (KYC) processes. The findings, detailed in its Q4 2024 Quarterly Threat Intelligence News Update, expose a sophisticated method of identity fraud involving the collection and misuse of genuine identity documents and images. This operation underscores the continually evolving tactics employed by fraudsters to exploit identity verification systems.

The discovery was facilitated by iProov’s Biometric Threat Intelligence service, a cutting-edge program designed to identify and analyze emerging threats in identity fraud. Through advanced threat-hunting operations and rigorous red team testing conducted within the iProov Security Operations Center (iSOC), the service provides organizations with actionable insights into fraudulent tools, techniques, and strategies. This proactive approach equips businesses with essential defensive measures to combat the growing challenges in identity security.

“What’s particularly alarming about this discovery is not just the sophisticated nature of the operation, but the fact that individuals are willingly compromising their identities for short-term financial gain,” says Andrew Newell, Chief Scientific Officer at iProov. “When people sell their identity documents and biometric data, they’re not just risking their own financial security – they’re providing criminals with complete, genuine identity packages that can be used for sophisticated impersonation fraud. These identities are particularly dangerous because they include both real documents and matching biometric data, making them extremely difficult to detect through traditional verification methods.’’

New research from roaming specialists Kaleido Intelligence projects that combined wholesale and retail roaming revenues across consumer, travel eSIM, and IoT mobile connections will surpass $50 billion by 2027, marking a 32% growth compared to 2024 figures.

This significant growth will be driven by a surge in data roaming activity, spurred by the widespread adoption of 5G roaming services and increased inbound roaming traffic through travel eSIM usage. The report forecasts a dramatic 73% increase in combined consumer and IoT roaming data usage, reaching over 10,500 Petabytes by 2027.

According to Kaleido’s Mobile Roaming Data Hub 2024, IoT roaming wholesale revenues will experience more accelerated growth from 2027 onward. This expansion will be fueled by the continued implementation of Billing and Charging Evolution (BCE) and access-based charging models by service providers. In the shorter term, these advancements are expected to drive a 45% rise in IoT roaming wholesale revenues by 2027 compared to 2024, highlighting the transformative impact of these innovations on the global roaming ecosystem.

Kaleido’s Chief Analyst Nitin Bhas commented: “While 5G SA (standalone) roaming is expected in 2025, varied operator strategies, including a more immediate focus on 5G NSA, are shaping the current landscape. The adoption of 5G NSA roaming by consumers is set to push active 5G roaming connections to nearly 1 billion by 2027, while 5G SA’s advanced capabilities will address growing demand in key IoT sectors such as automotive in the years that follow.”
